Gabby wandered into the kitchen while Josh stood just inside the front door, looking as if he might bolt at any moment.

“Have a seat,” Rose said, gesturing toward the couch.

He moved gingerly across the room and perched on the very edge of the couch.

Rose went to her room, tossed her backpack on her desk, and picked up the book of magic. It was warm, and she could sense it was a little unsettled, the feeling rippling beneath her hands like a fish swimming agitatedly.

“It’s all right,” she murmured. “He’s actually family.”
